Metronome

The ocean acts like the metronome, the unchanging rhythm of the tide keeping time for the ever-changing oceanic landscape. The waves upon the beach become a visual reminder of the ever moving now of nature. Metronome is an abstract wave, physically conceptualising the constancy of the tide. In Metronome the sea cannot recede from our view or awareness, instead cycling in eternity. The circle represents the continuous present and presence of the tide, without past or future, kept in an ever moving now. The sculpture is inspired by the way I see and feel about the ocean, at once inviting, intriguing and disquieting.

Metronome forms part of a series of coast path abstracts inspired by Sherwood’s explorations of the South West Coast.
